Attacking the Stunt

In today's newsletter we will dive into how offenses are attacking a strong "stunt" coming off the passer when running shooters off screens. These aggressive stunts into the airspace of a shooter is a defensive strategy we have highlighted before, with the benefit being that it eliminates the need for the defensive big to show out on screens where there is an increased risk of slips or pocket passes to the rim. So, with this defensive philosophy to keep bigs closer to the rim and create a more unusual read for the shooter, the defender guarding the passer will sprint and close the gap on the catch. Here's an example...

Zooming In: As shown, the stunt arriving on the catch can take away a shot or curl opportunity, as well as buy time for the chasing defender to get back to neutral. This strategy also allows the defensive big to stay attached to their assignment and remain a presence at the rim.

As the ever-evolving chess match continues, offenses have responded in order to counteract this defense, finding unique ways to create space for the shooter coming off the screen and attack a stunting defender.

Here are a few...

#1 - "Cut the Stunt" - Creating Space

One such strategy is "burn cutting" the passer to the rim immediately on the pass. If this cut is made quickly enough the stunt defender will often lose vision momentarily as they stunt toward the shooter and collapse the lane. Trying to both stunt toward a shooter AND take away a back cut is a tall task for most defenders to guard...

While an uncontested finish is the ultimate measure of success for this quick rim cut, more often than not, its value lies in its ability to create gravity and pull the defender out of the stunt, opening the space for the shooter running off the screen...

Zooming In: This burn cut is especially good when non-shooting guards make the pass, as defenses are often more liberal in stunting off of them. With this cut to the rim defenders must honor them and stay attached.

This strategy of burn cutting to punish a stunter and open a space for a shooter is also seen when offenses Pop a big after a ball screen. Once again, this timely cut creates both space and an advantage for a shooter to play from...

Not only does the rim cut remove the stunter's ability to take away the direct shot, but it also opens up a gap for the shooter to curl into if their defender remains attached when chasing over the screens...

Zooming In: Not shown here, but the next level advantage an offense may find by quickly burn cutting the passer is by sending that cutter off another set of screens or having them set some kind of RIP screen of their own. We broke that type of action down a couple weeks ago in our breakdown of Tenerife's favorite actions for shooters.

#2 - "Boomerang Rips"

Perhaps rim cutting the guard is more advantageous when they have the size to finish inside and/or when their perimeter shot is not the most consistent. For more perimeter orientated guards offenses can use "Boomerang Rips" to attack the stunt. Here's an example...

Zooming In: As shown above, upon receiving the pass off the screen the shooter immediately boomerang passes it back to the respacing passer who rips and attacks the closeout.

Zooming In 2.0: As mentioned before, with the stunter momentarily losing vision, it is important for the passer to relocate and drift away from the shooter, creating a longer closeout.

Lastly, with this attack, the spacing behind the passer must be taken into account as well. Spacing the remaining players along the baseline ensures that the passer has ample room to drift to the 45 and a gap to attack into. Poor spacing behind the passer will allow the second help defender to properly support the stunt defender and close down any driving opportunities.

To learn more about the execution of these strategies and others to attack the stunt, including:

  • Cutting to offensive rebound
  • Posting the passer to prevent the stunt

Slappin' Glass Podcast

We headed to France on the podcast this week where we had the pleasure of diving into a ton of great topics with Vichy Clermont Head Coach, Guillaume Vizade! Coach Vizade lays out great nuggets of wisdom and teaching points on:

  • Limiting PNR Turnovers: We started the conversation with Coach Vizade's thoughts on building the fundamentals of a great PNR team, and specifically, how he thinks about limiting turnovers. In this conversation we discuss spacing, role clarification, reads, moving North-South to East-West, and much more. Terrific thoughts throughout.
  • Offensive Rebounding Tactics: During the "Start, Sub, or Sit?!" segment we heard Coach Vizade's ideas on offensive rebounding and where and when he prefers to send players to the glass. His club is one of the best in France's Pro B division this year when it comes to offensive rebounding, and his thoughts on the "corner crash" and much more are worth the listen.
  • Growing Young Talent: Coach Vizade and his club are known for their ability to turn young, talented players into great pros, and we had fun hearing how he thinks about developing these players as they mature. We walk through meaningful playing time, surrounding them with other good players, and more.

Listen to this entire great conversation with Coach Vizade here...

"Louisville's basketball success did not begin with Crum, but he is the central figure of the university's sports history. And even that isn't saying enough, considering that the growth of the university, and for that matter, the emergence of the city of Louisville itself, were concurrent with the growth and success of Crum's basketball program. Some have said his program's success was a catalyst for those things. And Crum was the one who flipped the switch."

Quote of the Week

"It is essential to take risks. Examine the life of any lucky man or woman, and you are all but certain to find that he or she was willing, at some point, to take a risk. Without that willingness, hardly anything interesting is likely to happen to you." β€” Max Gunther
