Let's dive in..

DHO Adjustments & Combating the "Deny & Under"

It is no secret our affinity for the DHO, whether it be exploring their various usages in conversations on the podcast, or within in some of our Deep Dive Breakdowns HERE, HERE, and HERE... we're big fans...

Inspired by our recent podcast with Zenit St. Petersburg Head Coach, Xavi Pascual, and followed by a breakdown on his clever teaching of Off-Ball Screening Techniques...

We wondered if the same type of Off-Ball Screening Techniques, such as lateral adjustments and reverse pivots, could be applied to our beloved DHO to help create similar advantages for the offense?...

The answer is yes, here's how...

Lateral Adjustments

One catch when trying to create an advantage through a DHO is that a majority of them are run with the receiver coming to the ball from below the DHO, or, east-to-west, which can provide an opportunity for a defender to shoot under the screen and get back to a neutral position on the ball. Of course, this is not always the case when running a shooter off a DHO, but when a less threatening shooter comes off a handoff that is angled away from the rim, how can the big giving that handoff help get their teammate's defender chasing over to open an attacking lane into the paint? Here's where the best of the DHO-giving bigs use a lateral adjustment to help with that...

Combating the "Deny & Under"

As we are now seeing more and more teams are picking up their aggression on DHOs with the "Deny & Under" tactic...

With this amount of pressure on the ball it becomes more difficult for the big to toss the ball and almost impossible to adjust the screen to prevent the under.

With all highly efficient offenses, regardless of whether they run PnRs, DHOs or Off Ball Screens, being able to force "overs" or routinely punish "unders" is vital to their success. These techniques can be the difference between an offense consistently creating advantages no matter what the defensive game plan is, or routinely stalling out and forced into more stagnate re-screens or late-clock isolation situations.

To learn how teams are combating this defensive strategy to punish the under and learn more about DHO adjustments to force overs, Plus:

Slappin' Glass Podcast

Orange Coast College WBB Head Coach, Sammy Doucette, has her program firing on all cylinders this season and ranked in the Top 3 in the state of California for Junior College basketball. This coming only a few years after she took over a program that had six players on the roster. This week we sat down with Coach Doucette to peel back some of the layers that have led to this turnaround as well as her thoughts on a number of topics including:

  • Program Management: As mentioned, Coach Doucette leads a community college program where players are only there for a couple of years before moving on. We explore her philosophy on program building and creating a atmosphere that players can thrive in during their short stint in the program.
  • Intentional Leadership: Within our conversation about program management we also touch on how Coach Doucette fosters a "player-led" environment and how she helps mentor her leaders throughout the process. A great segment on actionable ways to empower young people to lead.
  • Empty Corner PNR's: During "Start, Sub, or Sit?!" we hear some of Coach Doucette's thoughts on why she loves basing much of her offense on Empty Corner PNR's, as well as teaching the art of the slip from the on-ball screener.
  • Game Planning Principles: During "Start, Sub, or Sit?!" we also discuss how Coach Doucette approaches game-planning and the things she is most concerned about when putting it together. Great insights here on how much or little information to give players before games.
