Let's dive in..

"The Gaggle" - Blurring the Lines

Last week we released what quickly became one of the most watched videos of the year in Part 1 of Josh Schertz's "Inside the Set" Offensive Series detailing how he teaches Split Cuts. Today, in Part 2 with Coach Schertz we dive into Indiana State's "Pistol X" & "Punch X" split action. As was highlighted last week with Coach Schertz's Elbow X, the main distinction between the Pistol X and Punch X is that it prescribes where the ball is entered along with what spacing/floor balance they will start the possession in. Once the ball is entered, Indiana St. can play out of their concepts and find organic solutions,"Organized Randomness" as Coach Schertz terms it.

This week, within Indiana State's Pistol and Punch series we dive into the details of the off-ball 3 player "Gaggle" Action. What's a "Gaggle?", here's an example...

In Part 2 of our "Inside the Set" Film Room Series with Coach Schertz we detail the philosophy, teaching points, catching areas, and spacing concepts that go along with the Pistol X, Punch X, and Gaggle Actions. This video and the deep-dive newsletter that goes along with it are now on SGTV for members of SG Plus...

Slappin' Glass Podcast

We were excited to be joined on the podcast this week by the lead assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers, Chris Jent! Coach Jent is highly respected{ as one of the best coaches in the NBA and we had a blast picking his brain on a variety of topics including:

  • Building a Vocabulary: A fun discussion on how Coach Jent thinks about building both an offensive and defensive vocabulary for his teams. We dive into structuring play calls, the value of being simpler on defense, and much more.
  • Shot Mechanics: Coach Jent is known as a fantastic teacher when it comes to the art of shooting. During "Start, Sub, or Sit?!" we explored how he thinks about working with a player's hand placement, follow through, off-hand, and shooting psychology.
  • "Tough to Defend": Also during "Start, Sub, or Sit?!" we touched on some of the more difficult actions to defend where a shooter is involved.

πŸ“Ί Las Vegas Aces - RIP Screen to Hammer Screens

πŸ“š How to Do What You Love

"To do something well you have to like it. That idea is not exactly novel. We've got it down to four words: "Do what you love." But it's not enough just to tell people that. Doing what you love is complicated."

πŸ“š Pederson's Path: Veteran Coach Handles Jaguars "Like Grown Men"

β€œIt feels good to be a part of a professional locker room, not only in the locker room but also when you talk to the coaches,” pass rusher and team captain Josh Allen said. β€œIt’s a professional setting. ... He’s not getting on us; he’s letting us know what’s real and he’s talking to us like grown men. With that, nothing but respect. We want to grow.”
