Let's dive in...

Reggio Emilia - Attacking Low Tags

One of our favorite leagues to explore of late is Italy's top professional division, Lega Basket Serie A (LGA). From last week's podcast with Olimpia Milano Head Coach, Ettore Messina (as well as his 2020 Playbook), to our sit down with Coach Iacopo Squarcina from EuroCup Champion, Virtus Bologna, as well as looking at Reyer Venezia's interesting "Zone to Man" defensive action and "Horns Flare to Baseline Pin", and Germani Brescia's "Stagger Away to Iso" set...it's hard to not appreciate the terrific basketball being played in this league.

In this week's breakdown we again travel to Italy to highlight the terrific playbook of the club, Reggio Emilia, explore how they design specific actions to attack the Low Tag and leverage the shooting ability of their 5 men to attack Bigs reluctant to extend out high in the PnR. Each action Reggio Emilia uses has a unique purpose in exploiting a defense's tendencies and/or playing to the strengths of their own abilities.

Let's take a look...

Attacking the Low Tag Man

Within Reggio Emilia's Stagger Away and Turnout Sets two distinct concepts are evident in how they attempt to distort the Low Tag and free up the rim. The first concept we'll look at is Reggio Emilia's clever "High to Low" cutting action after entering a set.

"High to Low" Movement - Stagger to Shallow Cut Action

In this first example flowing out of their Stagger Series, Reggio Emilia's PG clears to the opposite wing via a Shallow Cut while the first stagger screener lifts behind the ballscreen.

"High to Low" Movement - Turnout to PG Corner Cut Action

Reggio Emilia revisits this "High to Low" movement again in their Turnout Entry, this time with the PG clearing all the way to the opposite corner.

The Chase Screen

All the above "High to Low" movement is made all the more successful in Reggio Emilia's offense through the second key element of their offense, the quick "Chase Screen."

To see a deeper dive on these two concepts in action, plus how Reggio Emilia exploits the shooting ability of their bigs through the use of a Toss RIP Screen and the Pistol Side Stack view today's breakdown on SGTV. Available for single purchase or Free to SG Plus Members...

πŸ“š One Big Question for Women's Sports

"Fifty years later, the growth has been staggering. And women’s sports have become more popular, lucrative, and sought-after by investors than anytime in U.S. history. But despite the gains, women’s sports are hardly equal, and experts believe we’ve only tapped into a fraction of growth potential. One of the major questions about how to accomplish this? Whether or not to combine women’s championships on the same stage as their male counterparts."

πŸ“š Friction: The Hidden Force that Holds You Back

"When we think of improving our value to an organization, we often think about the skills we need to develop, the jobs we should take, or the growing responsibility we have. In so doing, we miss the most obvious method of all: reducing friction."

πŸ“š Steph Curry Leaves No Room for Debate About His Legacy

β€œ'These last two months of the playoffs, these last three years, this last 48 hoursβ€”every bit of it has been an emotional roller coaster on and off the floor,' Curry said after the game. 'You’re carrying all of that on a daily basis to try to realize a dream and a goal, like we did tonight. And you get goosebumps just thinking about, you know, all those snapshots and episodes that we went through to get back here, individually, collectively. And that’s why I said I think this championship hits different. That’s why I have so many emotions, and still will, just because of what it took to get back here.'”
