Let's dive in...

The Reverse Offense

The Reverse Angle/Step Up Ballscreen has become a highly utilized concept over the years because of the wide array of actions an offense can connect it to when trying to create an advantage. This week we're excited to collaborate with Perth Wildcats Video Coordinator, Dan Vlahov, to dissect the Australian "Reverse Offense". We've explored Australia's use of the offense previously on the podcast with Boomer's HC Brian Goorjian and as well as in our "Film Room" segment featuring Coach Simon Mitchell's "Bolt Transition Offense." {πŸ”’} Today we delve into the fundamental actions of the offense centered around the Reverse Ballscreen, along with a few of the common variations and actions being run across the Australian NBL. Here's a tiny segment of the offense...

One of the more powerful elements of this offense is that its framework allows for plenty of flexibility when it comes to catering actions around a teams strength (or attacking a defense's weakness). Whether it's by playing around two bigs, utilizing off-ball screens and "Split-type" actions, or giving space to a playmaking ballhandler, the offense thrives on this adaptability.

Playing with Two Bigs

Got two bigs? No problem. The Reverse Offense offers a straightforward framework that enables two bigs to effectively space and play together through "High-Lows," elbow spacing, or dunker cuts...

Or, transitioning away from a ballscreen offense and getting into some "Blocker-Mover" type actions...

In both situations, whether it's the "Last PNR Spacing" {πŸ—ž} concepts in example one, or the off-ball screening in the second, both bigs in the offense play opposite of each other in a tandem, keeping plenty of space on the floor for the other three playmakers.

"Point" Offense

Love "Splits" and "Princeton-type" cutting? The Boomers can easily flow into more off-ball cutting out of this offense too. During our discussion with Coach Brian Goorjian, he highlighted how Australia managed to challenge and defeat Team USA by transitioning their offense away from the angled ballscreen and instead emphasized off-ball cutting and screening. By opting to pass the ball directly to the big on the flash up into the screen, the offense seamlessly transforms into a "Point" series, with players executing splits screening from the corners or elbows.

Zooming In: The ability to adapt and introduce a well-timed "change-up" can be invaluable, providing the margins needed to secure a victory. By maintaining the familiar spacing offered by the Reverse Offense, teams can seamlessly transition between playing styles without sacrificing their offensive flow.

Sets for Shooters

Need to run a set for a shooter so they'll stop pouting and play defense? Another nice functionality of the offense is that the "Reverse Screener" can flip from setting a ballscreen or catching the ball to run splits, to setting a pin away on an unsuspecting defender...

Again, the spacing and adaptability of the offense can keep a defense on their toes, never sure if they'll be in a situation where they need to "tag" a ballscreen, navigate splits cuts, or lock and trail a shooter off a wide pin... tough to do.

And for good measure, throw in a "Rip to Get" set for a shooter to receive a middle handoff after putting pressure on the rim with a backscreen.

Whether it's for it's great PNR spacing, ability to create elbow and corner Splits, or spring shooters open off pin downs, today's "teach tape" video of how Australia and the NBL utilizes the "Reverse Offense" offers plenty of insights on effective offense.
