Under SolutionsFrom time to time, we like to revisit a previous breakdown that generated great feedback and still holds plenty of relevance. Todayβs re-run looks back at a favoriteβOlympiacosβ smart and adaptable strategy for attacking βUndersβ in the pick-and-roll, blending rescreens with off-ball movement to create real advantages. When building out oneβs PNR offense, considerations should be given to the strengths of the players involved and finding solutions to various coverages to fit those strengths. In the past, we have looked at several different solutions in attacking the Drop {π}, Ice {π}, and Switch {π} coverages. Today, we will focus on Euroleague club Olympiacos' solution to attacking "Unders" (player guarding the ball going under the screen) in the ballscreen through the use of the rescreen {π} and off-ball cutting. Zooming In: As demonstrated above, the possession can really stall out when the offense is committed to attacking through the rescreen. However, if your point guard is equipped with the midrange skills and creativity similar to Marcelinho Huertas, let'm cook! Why it was effective? With a willing passer on the ball along with skilled forwards in Kostas Papanikolaou, Alec Peters {π§}, and Sasha Vezenkov, Olympiacos could better exploit the under by quickly flipping the screen and bringing the corner player directly into the action, attacking the shell coverage and punishing the rim help. Zooming In: In the clip above, on the rescreen towards the 2-men side Walkup (ballhandler) immediately dribbles into a pitch with the corner to exploit the low defender. It is important to highlight too that should the on ball defender opt to go under the rescreen, they are often positioned too low to offer any meaningful support or disrupt the toss. Another crucial aspect in Olympiacos' under strategy was understanding their preference to attack through ballscreens to the short side of the floor, or through step-up screens first... ... this action would more often than not result in a rescreen back to the full side of the floor where the defense could load up with nail help. However, that spacing familiarity fostered collective awareness, allowing them to seamlessly adapt to the situation and trigger cutting solutions to the under. Let the Chess Match Begin! As the threat of the corner began to pull the defense away from the rim, favorable situations arose where the 45 cut could be utilized to create easy scoring opportunities... Zooming In: Shown above, Vezenkov in the 45 position, fakes the cut to receive the hand off himself. Leading to every coaches favorite defense, the "point switch."β {π} Together with Dr. Dish π¨This month only, Slappinβ Glass subscribers can get an exclusive $2,000 off plus FREE shipping on their purchase of a Dr. Dish CT+, All-Star+, or Rebel+.
